I don’t usually celebrate album anniversaries. I have a hard time perceiving the past. I like now, and what’s to come. But this album, that turns 20 today, changed my life. I’d had success already, but everything clicked into place on this album. I met some of the greatest musicians and engineers in the world and learned so much about making records from them. When I think back on what made the album so special, some thoughts come to mind, and they’re worth my remembering: Life came into the roo

This video was taken the day I played through the first build of the @neuraldsp Archetype JM X plugin. We’d set up my amp rig in the live room and were switching between the rig and the plugin. I threw every test at it; does turning the volume knob to 5 create a natural response in tone? It did. Does a single note that’s held die out without a noise gate eating it or the “math” just giving up? It did. Do two notes bent at once with distortion on create natural harmonic overtones exactly like the

We said goodbye to Moose yesterday. He came into my life when I needed pure love, and that’s what he gave me for 14 years. We traded on that love, as well as something else I now realize was important: routine. For a guy like me who left home at 19 and had never lived the same day twice, our routine brought real comfort and stability. When dinner is always at 8, and the afternoon walks are at 4:30, those kinds of things can heal your heart. And they did, time and time again. Today my heart is so

One of the highlights from my live Thanksgiving Day broadcast on @lifewithjohnmayer - a musical demonstration to answer Olivia’s question about one of my favorite guitar solos to play with @deadandcompany.

This is the most valuable thing I own. It’s a folder of photos of my father, spanning his life from being a baby, an educator, a husband and a father. It’s the only evidence of his life that will exist over time. These are the “documents” you read about people taking from their homes. When you hear someone say they’ve lost everything in a fire, this is much of that everything, if not all of it. Those who say they’ll be okay still have their folders and their albums. Those who are inconsolable ha

I miss you the most when I’m exhausted and I just want to talk to my friend. I missed you when this magician was performing at this party I was at, and he was just okay, and I knew you’d have interjected with insanely funny one-liners, even if I couldn’t imagine what you would have said. I just miss you. We all miss you. Loss may be out of our control, but remembrance is our act of defiance. And we will never forget you. Love you Bob. Happy Birthday.

I guess what I’m saying is… thank God for our ability to remember those who have left us. It’s one of the rare divine traits of being human; we can reflect and revisit and keep the flame of someone’s impact on our lives burning bright. Thank God we don’t ever have to let go. Thank God for our memories. Happy Birthday Bob, I love you. ♥️

The real time inception of the bridge of ‘I Don’t Miss You’. The song is out now and this section sounds almost exactly like it did the moment it first happened in the studio
