All of the great experiences in my life were only meaningful because I had people to share them with…do you feel that? Good Is On The Way.

The single most asked question I’ve gotten over the decades of making music is, “How do you write a good song?” I wish I had one brilliant answer that made me sound like I knew exactly what I was doing. 😂 Truth is, it never seems to happen the same way twice. I wish there was a magic formula, but there ain’t. Sometimes a song falls out of the sky. Most of the time, you just gotta keep shaking the fruit out of the idea tree and composting the bad ones. There’s no magic method. Believe me, I’ve lo

There was a night I almost didn't make it to morning. I’ve always written songs from my places of deepest emotion whether it was great happiness or darkest shadow. This song comes from a place I haven’t spoken of. There was a time in my life when I felt lost, overwhelmed, and honestly didn't know if I could keep going. What pulled me through wasn't having all the answers. When I was at my lowest place I had people in my life who reached out and reminded me of why it was important not to give up.

I wrote this song about finding common humanity in times of war, when I got back from playing music on the streets of Iraq during the bombing of “Operation Shock and Awe” in 2004. It was inspired by witnessing the baffling complexity of war. Watching generals and politicians talk about the political, economical and financial costs of bombing another nation, the strategies of war and the propaganda to build support for it, was starkly contrasted by the human cost of war for people on the ground.

One of the first reality checks of what we were about to experience. And believe me, this wasn’t me celebrating. It was me trying to hide that I was scared shitless. Follow if you want to hear more about this experience. It’s time to share. 22 years ago I landed in Iraq to understand the human cost of war for myself. The news wasn’t showing us what we needed to know. This inspired the album Yell Fire. Drop a 🔥 if you want to hear

Seventeen years ago, I wrote this song inspired by a moment that felt bigger than politics. It was a moment that asked us to rise. To lead with compassion. To believe in each other a little more. Writing and recording it felt hopeful. It felt like choosing belief over fear, unity over division. It came from a deep belief that music could reflect the best of who we are and who we’re trying to become. That vision still matters. Today felt like the right day to share it again. To remember and honor

I wrote this with my friend @greghvnsen during a time when I was feeling despair creeping in. It’s a reminder to myself to keep hope and not give up, even when the world feels overwhelming. Sending this out to everyone today who needs to feel like you’re not alone in the world. #hope #minnesota
